Mahonia aquifolium, the Oregon grape or holly-leaved barberry, is a species of flowering plant in the family Berberidaceae, native to western North America. The Oregon grape is a bushy perennial plant with shiny leaves that resemble holly. When it is fully grown, the shrub is between 2 to 6 feet high.
The yellow pigment in the stems and roots of oregon grape is related to various antimicrobial alkaloids, most notably berberine, a powerful plant compound. They are rich in vitamin C.
